echo "Hello, world! 👋🏽"

👤 Who Am I?

My name is Deka (also my first name), it means 10 in greek language. You might be familiar with my name if you know the metric system. My last and family name is Akbar, which means huge but interestingly on the contrary to the meaning of my name, I am petite.

I am a lifelong learner and software engineer. I am passionate about developing software tools that make people's lives easier.

My current mission is to democratize data and empower humans to make better decisions with Data. I am eager to improve my expertise and experience, especially in bringing together software engineering, Data harnessing techniques, and Artificial Intelligence.

🦾 My Skills and Experience

I had worked with and have production experience in:

  • software engineering: backend, frontend, fullstack, shell scripting, Linux, web development, app development, testing pyramid, etc.,
  • the data science-y and data engineering world: databases, distributed data systems, data science, data analytics, machine learning, deep learning, data engineering, artificial intelligence, data wrangling, data viz, etc.,
  • the modern trends in devops and cloud native solutions: CI/CD pipelines, docker, kubernetes, helm,
  • the cloud: AWS, GCP, various cloud and big data tech stack,

and always ready to venture into research beyond the available tools to make things work better.

For a more concise and paper-like summary, please see my current resume here. In case you're wondering, yes I created it using plain HTML & CSS and following Seaborn's color palette 😸.

🌎 Locations

Currently, I am based in San Francisco. I had lived in several other places that I once called Home (stayed > 1 month), in sorted order of date:
👉🏽 San Francisco, USA 👈🏽now working here
New York, USAdid my grad study and remote working during COVID-19
Jakarta, Indonesiaworked here
Sydney, Australiainterned here
Singapore, Singaporestudied here for my ugrad study
Bogor, Indonesiaraised here, my family is here
Singaraja, Indonesiaborn here, my extended family is here

🎓 My Education

I am recent graduate of the Master's program in Computer Science at Columbia University under the ML Track (with major interest in Database systems). I have taken mostly ML-sy and Database-y classes, TA-ing some ML / DB classes, and participated in Distributed Data systems research project at Columbia.

In the past, I received my bachelor degree in Computer Science from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. I graduated with first-class honours and specialized in Data Science and Intelligent Systems. I am very grateful to the Singapore Government who had sponsored me fully throughout my four years of study.

🧑🏽‍🎨 My Interests

I am excited to learning new things and advancing my skills and experience, not just in technical domain but also to growing professionally and being an excellent team player.

The things that currently interest me the most is Data, distributed systems, democratizing data through development of tools, and cloud native solutions.

I believe data and software design are essential to Machine Learning and AI, because if you have no good data you cannot build good models. And models have little value unless they are reproducible, in production, and have users benefitting from them. Thus, I am very interested in developing and researching efficient toolings that enable human to benefits from data easily and effectively.

🎨 Projects

Graduate Research Project: Distributed Track Join (TJ) on Cloud

We extended the TJ algorithm to support join operations on arbitrary files distributed over low commodity machines under the cloud environment. We first assessed the feasibility and the requirements of a distributed query engine on Cloud, then added relational database support for distributed TJ to exploit the underlying database features and optimization. The project achieved satisfactory join performance in latency and resource usage, and robust to various data partitions and join key distributions.

Delphi

Data and the technology surrounding Data Science, Analytics and Machine Learning (DSAML) can be quite esoteric and not easy to interpret. Delphi is non-library framework that allow Data Scientists and Analysts to develop and deploy interactive exploratory DSAML applications easily and rapidly.

Mbah Dukun

Mbah Dukun (means Shaman in Bahasa) is a self-service time-series forecasting application aimed to enable any users to perform forecasting and time-series predictions through simple clicks without Machine Learning skills required.
